When I got home today from school Mike told me he wiped out. At first I thought he said he felt wiped out and I said we’d talk as soon as I brought the garbage out to the street (garbage day tomorrow). When I came back in he told me that earlier in the evening he got up from the couch using the walker, intending to find the phone so he could have it by him. I forgot to put it on the coffee table before I left. Wouldn’t have been a problem if he weren’t Mike. :-)

While he was up he decided to close the front door. When I left, I kept the inside door open in order to have light from outside spill into the living room – in our state at this time of year, you want all the natural light you can get since we don’t get as much during the day now – he closed the door, turned around with the walker, thought something was under one of the legs of the walker, proceeded to turn the walker upside-down to check (didn’t find anything), then as he was putting it back right side up to start moving again, he wiped out.

If it had been me, I would have bashed into the edge of the wall outside the front closet or knocked over the wine glasses on the shelf by the Christmas tree. Not him. His thought process is amazing. He knew AS he was falling HOW he should fall – and so he did. Rather than twist which is a natural motion, he fell straight down, grabbing at the Christmas tree and the edge of the of the wall. In his situation he should not twist, that would only add complications to his situation with the new knee. Once he had his ‘poop in a group’ (his new phrase), he grabbed the walker, pulled himself up using the arm of the loveseat and the walker, hauled himself to the couch and proceeded to take an Oxycontin (you go, Mike!) and then took a nap.

He didn’t even knock over the tree! He admitted that the real issue was what I keep trying to ingrain in his head…..think before you move with the walker. Don’t get cocky. He said he just naturally thought he had to fix something and boom. On his arse he went.

He’s learned his lesson.

I’m happy he’s okay.

I’m tired.

I have to get some sleep.

Good night.
